Solar power: US gives India time till year-end to scrap local sourcing rules

According to reports, the United States has agreed to give India time till December 14 this year to remove the requirement for mandatory domestic sourcing of solar panels and modules under its national solar power generation programme. “This means that all contracts for solar power production entered into with power producers after December 14 under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) should not include compulsory domestic sourcing norms which the World Trade Organisation has ruled against,” a government official ... Sri Lanka, India to set up solar unit soon

According to reports, Sri Lanka will soon kick-start the process of setting up a solar power plant in eastern port town Trincomalee after discussions with India, which is partnering the Government in the initiative. “The next step would be to undertake a feasibility study and do the groundwork,” spokesman of the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy Sulakshana Jayawardena told The Hindu on Wednesday. BHEL bags 15 Megawatt solar photovoltaic plant order in Gujarat

According to reports, State-run Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has secured an order for setting up a 15 MW solar photovoltaic power plant on EPC basis in Gujarat. Gujarat Alkalies and Chemical Limited placed the order for setting up plant at Gujarat Solar Park in Charanka, the power equipment maker said in a statement. Dark clouds loom over local solar companies even as renewable energy getting popular

According to reports, solar energy may be growing in popularity, but that seems to be of little cheer for most domestic solar companies which are hurting from a deluge of Chinese imports. During FY17, India exported solar modules and cells worth USD 69 million and imported USD 3.2 billion. Compared to FY16, solar imports grew by 36 percent and exports declined by 60 percent.
