Archimedes Green Energys to manufacture rooftop wind turbine

According to reports, Archimedes Green Energys (P) Ltd is set to showcase a rooftop wind turbine at a renewable energy exposition to be hosted in the city later during the week.

“The small wind turbine useful for small offices and homes will be manufactured in partnership with a Korean firm ESCO RTS and Dutch technology at Medchal near here,” Suryaprakash Gajjala, CEO of Archimedes Green Energys (P) Ltd, told BusinessLine.

The product is an outcome of 20 years of research work of the Dutch national Marinus Mieremet.

Describing it as a “Make in India” product, Suryaprakash said that the company (a start-up) will set up a manufacturing unit with an outlay of Rs. 50-60 crore and begin rolling out later during the year.

Named after the Greek mathematician and engineer, it can produce 1,500 kWh of energy at a wind speed of 5 m/s -approximately half an average household’s energy use, Suryaprakash said.

The first installation is likely to come up at the Lord Venkateshwara Temple (Birla temple) at Naubat Pahad, once the company gets the required permission.

The manufacturing unit to be set up on two acres will have a capacity for one lakh units per annum. Apart from catering to the local market, it will be an export-oriented unit, Suryaprakash said.

The sleek windmill has a maintenance free turbine that can be fixed on top of an apartment, in fields and everywhere. It can rotate 360 degrees and works in even low velocity wind from 0.9 meters/second to as high as 14 meters/second. In high wind such as 22 meters/second, it has a cut-off and stops to avoid damage to the turbine.

The two rooftop wind mills variants come in 36 kg and 112 kg and can be transported without much hassles. The wind mill comes with fibre reinforced plastic blades and generates energy required for basic household needs.

The wind turbine comprises three circular blades which are wrapped around one another and then expanded. This creates a three-dimensional conical turbine, similar to elongated shells found on the beach. The special design ensures that wind is drawn into the turbine.

The company believes that the product will find application everywhere especially in Smart City projects.
