UP jails to get solar-powered jammers

According to reports, in a bid to curb of illegal phone calls originating in jails, as many as 300 mobile phone jammers powered by solar energy are going to be installed in 24 district and central jailsacross Uttar Pradesh before the end of March 2017.

The move is aimed at completely preventing illegal phone communication between prisoners and their aides, often used to execute crimes such as contract murders, robbery and loot. The maximum number of jammers will be installed in Bareilly central jail besides those in Naini, Lucknow, Meerut, Gorakhpur, Agra and others.According to UP police, Bareilly central jail will have a maximum of 41 jammers, Naini central jail 28, Lucknow central jail 24, Meerut district jail 15, Aligarh district jail 12, Etah central jail seven and Agra central jail six.

 There are around 88,747 prisoners in 57 district and five central jails apart from other jails in Uttar Pradesh.
Speaking with TOI, additional director general of police for prison, G L Meena, said, “Prisoners take advantage of shortage of power supply in the state to easily make contact with their counterparts over phones hidden in jails to execute a crime. But now, effective solar powered jammers will stop this nuisance.”
Meena said, “State government has sanctioned Rs 3.51 crore for the installation of solar plants, jammers, CCTV cameras, video conference system, door frame detectors and other security strengthening devises in jails.”

The installation of solar-powered jammers will be done in stages. In the first phase, jails in Muzaffarnagar, Agra, Varanasi, Mirzapur, Sultanpur, Meerut and Noida are going to be fitted with solar-powered jammers. Later, the jails in Bareilly, Gorakhpur, Naini, Pratapgarh, Lucknow, Aligarh and Bulandshahr will have the jammers and the rest later.
