1,500 Gujarat farmers to be given solar-powered water pumps

According to reports, the Gujarat government plans to give solar-powered water pumps to 1,500 farmers with the dual aim of providing electricity connections to farmers living in far-fetched areas as well as reduce burden of subsidy on the state treasury, it was officially announced here today.

Making the announcement, Gujarat Energy Minister Saurabh Patel said in a press release issued here, that the scheme would benefit farmers awaiting regular electricity connections.

Patel said it is difficult and costly for the government to set up infrastructure for new electricity connections in far -fetched areas, an official release said.

“Demand for irrigation-electricity is increasing exponentially for which we provide a subsidy of Rs 3,500 crore to farmers every year. Looking at these factors, we have decided to provide solar-power based pumps to them,” Patel said in the press release.

These solar-based pumps which are of three to five horse power capacity, would be distributed with the help of four state-owned power distribution companies.

“Farmers who have already applied for irrigation connection will be given priority. Each pump will cost us Rs 6 lakh. However, farmers will be given these pumps at a subsidised rate,” Patel said.
