According to reports, powerloom weavers in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts have sought 50 per cent subsidy to go in for solar power.
The association has appealed to the Union Government to increase the subsidy from the existing 30 per cent as the weavers do not have the financial resources to go in for renewable energy.
They are hit by the power problems in the State for the last five years and are unable to run the units with diesel generators.
A small-scale powerloom unit with 10 looms needs five kw energy every day. Each unit will need about Rs. 7 lakh to go in for solar power.
The Union Government should provide 50 per cent of the project cost as subsidy and another 50 per cent as loan. One powerloom unit here has installed solar as a pilot project.
Over two lakh powerlooms operate in the two districts and most of these do job work for master weavers.
The weavers supply yarn to the units and buy back the cloth. The Government should establish a warehouse in powerloom centres and supply yarn at a uniform rate.
