Earth Hour on March 29 to focus on renewable energy

According to reports, Earth Hour — the global campaign by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to raise awareness about climate change — will be observed from 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m on March 29.

This year’s campaign will mark the sixth year of the movement in the country and will ask individuals and organisations to switch to renewable energy, said WWF-India representatives at a press conference in the city on Tuesday.

On Earth Hour day, WWF-India will also launch two mobile apps — one that will measure ambient light in a room, based on a photo, and recommend if some lights can be switched off; and another that will help build cycling communities as an effective way of commuting.

Ravi Singh, secretary general and CEO, WWF-India, said a cyclothon will be organised on March 23 from Tiruvanmiyur to Mamallapuram to create awareness on climate change, and campaign for Earth Hour.

The global campaign has been organised in India from 2009. Over the years, the campaign has been organised across 150 cities and prominent establishments that have ‘switched off’ during Earth Hour include Rashtrapathi Bhavan, the residences of the Prime Minister and several Chief Ministers, and some prominent monuments.

In Chennai, the symbolic ‘switch off’ venue has been Spencer’s Plaza shopping mall.

Upcoming music director Anirudh Ravichander was announced the face of this year’s campaign. The music director, whose latest album for Dhanush-starrer ‘Vellai Illa Pattathaari’ is climbing the charts, has urged people to switch off unnecessary appliances to participate in the campaign.
