LED streetlights for 25km Rajarhat roads

According to reports, Around 25km of roads in Rajarhat New Town, mainly in Action Area I and III, will get LED streetlights. The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has already started the project.

Several residential and commercial complexes have come up in Action Area I and III. Work will start from different spots simultaneously, especially on the roads of Action Area IB where there has been a demand from locals for installation of streetlights for long. LED streetlights were previously installed along a long stretch of the main arterial road in Action Area I.

Officials said this will be the biggest LED streetlight project for NKDA till date. “Once they start operating, a considerable amount of energy can be saved and therefore, costs and carbon footprint would also be reduced,” an official said, adding that the authorities are following the guidelines of the Centre’s bureau of energy efficiency.Last year, the Centre approved the state government’s Rs 400-crore masterplan to develop New Town as a solar city, mentioning ways in which solar and renewable energy can be used to the optimum level in the township.

Also, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation will soon start the second Dhapa project in New Town where waste will be converted to energy. This renewable energy will be used in New Town. It was on February 2012 that the Centre had declared New Town Rajarhat as a solar city.

NKDA is also interested in the solar jacket prototype that S P Gon Chaudhuri came up with along with the scientists of SN Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences. Gon Chaudhuri recently demonstrated the solar jacket to NKDA and Hidco chairman Debashis Sen and have suggested to give a trial so that people like the green police could wear it during the summer.
