Madhusudan Khemka takes over as Chairman of Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association

Madhusudan Khemka, MD, Regen PowerTech, has taken over as the Chairman of IWTMA for a period of two years. He was earlier the vice chairman of the association. Regen over the last few years has gone on to become one of the largest wind turbine supplier to IPP’s in India. The association was earlier headed by Ramesh Kymal, CMD, Gamesa Wind Turbines Pvt. Ltd. for a period of two years.

The wind industry reached a record installation of 3163 MW in 2011-12. Since, the industry has faced numerous challenges over the last two years -withdrawal of accelerated depreciation benefits, challenges in transmission and evacuation, scheduling and forecasting among many others- resulting in a major drop in capacity additions.

As a result, installed capacity in 2012-13 fell to 1700 MW from 3163 NW the previous year and this financial year (2013-14)  is expected to remain lackluster with capacity addition of around 1600 MW.

However, the industry is hopeful of a recovery over the second half of next year and the following year, after the recent announcement of  the “National Wind Mission”. A lot will depend on how soon and effectively  the mission can be operational and how inclusive the mission is taking into consideration all the stakeholder interests like the “National Solar Mission”.
