According to reports, street lighting in Puducherry could soon become more energy efficient, thanks to an initiative to outsource the management and maintenance of street lights to private agencies. According to the new plans, all the street lights will be retrofitted with LED and other energy efficient bulbs to increase power saving. As a conservative estimate, the new plans will consume 50 per cent less energy, Managing Director of the Renewable Energy Agency, Puducherry, P.K. Jha said.
All the street lights will be controlled using a centralised control room and the implementing company will provide 10 years of maintenance and operations as well as a five year replacement warranty.
Already, there is a small demonstration of the system along the Gorimedu Road, near the Adi Dravidar Welfare office. When the project is finally implemented, the only cost to the Government will be the energy savings and there will be no upfront payments. The Puducherry Government has given an in-principal approval to the project. During a high-level meeting held on Monday, GIZ, an Indo-German Technical collaboration, KFW and Energy Efficient Services Limited gave a presentation. Government asked for a demonstration of the new system before a complete approval. According to Mr. Jha, it will probably be done on ECR or 100 feet road.
