According to reports, wind energy generation that clocked more than 1400 MW last week has come down to just 41 MW signalling the end of the windy season this year. In this backdrop, duration of power cuts has increased marginally in the city even though the situation is not alarming. Conceding that the windy season has come to an end, experts say that the wind power generation this year has been extended by more than a week when compared to last year. Data provided by Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation (TANTRANSCO) revealed that the wind energy generation in the state was nil on October 17 last year compared to 41 MW this year.
“We are witnessing disruptions in power supply for the past two days but hope that we don’t have to endure extended outages,” said D Rajasekaran, a resident of Saibaba Colony. Even though residents and small industries are apprehensive about the power situation with the windy season coming to an end, officials in Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) say that the government has taken necessary steps by entering into long term power purchase agreements to ease the power situation. “In addition to this, upcoming projects will also help us meet the demand,” said an official.
On the other hand, high tension consumers are confident there won’t be any crisis as TANGEDCO has proposed long term power purchase agreement for a capacity of more than 2122 MW. Dr. K Selvaraju, secretary general of the Southern India Mills’ Association ( SIMA) said that the government has to improve the power infrastructure in the state and achieve grid connectivity for a lasting solution. “Feeder segregation on the basis of agriculture, industrial and domestic, is a fundamental power infrastructure the government should focus on,” he said.
Asked about the fall in wind energy generation, he said that as the windy season has come to a close there will be wind power generation only occasionally. “But we believe that the situation is still manageable for HT consumers,” he added. Meanwhile, MSMEs who are low tension consumers say that they are apprehensive about the power scenario until the beginning of next windy season.
