According to reports, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation approved a proposal to sell gas generated at its sewage treatment plant at Pirana. This will fetch AMC nearly Rs 2.75 crore every year.
So far, the gas was burnt by corporation and was being wasted. Recently AMC invited tenders from companies to sell the generated at the sewage treatment plant.
Officials said that at least five companies showed interest in buying the gas. However, Rockstone Infrastructure Private Limited offered Rs 9.18 per cubic metre of gas. Rockstone wasn’t the only party to offer Rs 9.18. Biomethane Project Private Limited had also offered the same price, but Biomethane had demanded 10,000 sq metres of land to set up the plant, while Rockstone demanded only 4,000 sq m.
Officials said the proposal, after being cleared by the municipal commissioner, has been sent to the Water Supply committee for approval.
However, the committee which meets on Monday has kept the proposal in abeyance as it wanted more time to think the proposal over.
Suresh Patel, chairman of the committee, said “We need more time to study the proposal as this is the first time such a proposal has come for clearance. We may also hold negotiations with the companies and see which company offers a better price for the gas.”
However, once cleared, the proposal will be sent to the standing committee for approval after which the AMC will sign an MOU with the company.
Recently, AMC also planned to harness energy from waste biomass – mainly leaves collected from the streets. AMC currently prepares compost from vegetable waste it collects in the city, senior officials suggested developing a special anaerobic plant to generate methane, which can be used to generate electricity.
The plant will be set up at a site around Kankaria where a bit of domestic sewage will also be directed into a special digester with the biomass. A study demonstrated the technical feasibility of digesting plant waste and producing methane gas on a commercial scale in the city. The report analyzed by the AMC found that producing biogas from foliage requires simple infrastructure and gives a high yield of methane.
