According to reports, darkness after sunset has become a way of life in several villages, towns and cities across our country where electricity supply is either unavailable or available intermittently due to acute shortfall of electricity.
In an endeavour to bring light to such areas facing perpetual power shortages, L&T has developed a unique solar-powered portable lantern DVA. Popularly, referred to as ‘Diva,’ when fully charged it is capable of emitting uninterrupted light for up to 10 hours at maximum brightness and as much as 40 hours in night mode.
Conceived by the in-house design team of L&T Electrical & Automation at its Switchgear Design & Development Centre, this rechargeable off-the-grid innovative device offers several significant advantages over conventional solar lanterns.
E&A is a major business portfolio of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) – a technology, engineering, construction, manufacturing and financial services conglomerate, with global operations and turnover exceeding $14 billion.
E&A comprises two Strategic Business Groups (SBGs) – Products SBG and Projects SBG and offers a wide range of low and medium voltage switchgear, electrical systems, marine switchgear, industrial and building automation solutions, energy meters & relays. Its products and solutions cater to a variety of segments like industries, utilities, infrastructure, building and agriculture.
Its manufacturing facilities are located at Mumbai (Powai), Navi Mumbai (Mahape & Rabale), Ahmednagar, Vadodara, Coimbatore and Mysore in India as well as in Saudi Arabia, UAE (Jebel Ali, Dubai), Malaysia, Indonesia Australia and the UK.
DVA can be charged through dual modes. Users can either harness sunlight and charge the device through solar panels of 5W rating, or use a regular mains (AC supply) charging adaptor in low or no sunlight conditions. Life span of the solar panels typically ranges between 20 and 25 years, while its high bright LEDs have rated life of up to 50,000 hours.
Even with power consumption as low as 2W, the uniquely designed metalized reflector of DVA produces an output equivalent to a traditional 25W incandescentBSE 0.00 % bulb or a 5W CFL. Also, its 360-degree uniform illumination is glare free and soothing to the eyes.
D.VA will undoubtedly prove to be beneficial to millions who continue to live in darkness. Both rural and urban users will gain fromD.VA’s in-built dimming feature which intelligently monitors brightness control and provides a wide range of light outputs to suit outdoor and indoor needs at various times of the day. It is also equipped with salient features such as mobile charging and smart 4 LED battery status indicator.
This rechargeable off-the-grid innovative device is the recipient of India Design Council’s India Design Mark award (IMark) for good design. L&T endeavours to ensure that maximum people in India can take advantage of this lantern, and has initiated talks with the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and other state agencies.
DVA that comes with a two-year warranty on the product and a one-year warranty on the battery, is available at an affordable price through L&T’s nationwide network of specialized channel partners at more than 1,000 outlets.
