According to reports, opposition leader VS Achuthanandan has said that the term ‘solar energy’ unfortunately brings to mind only the ‘team solar panel’ scam these days. The fact remains that solar energy has a huge potential in a state which is staring at an energy crisis, he says in an article dispatched to media organisations on Thursday.
“The solar scam has dimmed the potential of solar energy and the positive benefits that could have been garnered by the state in the coming years. The bountiful solar energy available across the state should be tapped as there are several environmental concerns on nuclear and thermal projects,” he says.
The solar panel is the only viable alternative for the looming energy crisis especially with the Western Ghats Experts Ecology panel report chaired by Madhav Gadgil recommending ban on construction of big dams for hydel projects in the region. “Countries like China, America, Germany and Japan have already undertaken major solar initiatives and Germany is already producing 30,000 megawatt of solar power annually,” he says.
He points out that Germany has announced the shutdown of all its nuclear plants in the next 20 years. “The state gets 300 days of sunshine. There is a huge potential to exploit this energy and households that install solar panel can get a subsidy.”
