According to reports, Reunion Island, a French overseas region in the western Indian Ocean, is planning to share its expertise in renewable energy generation with Tamil Nadu with which it has strong cultural links. The 2,500 square kilometre volcanic island located to the East of Madagascar has a large Tamil diaspora.
President of regional council of the island Didier Robert met Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday.
“The discussion revolved around cooperation in the field of renewable energy generation because Reunion island and France has a good expertise in renewable energy, especially solar energy. The state government seems to have designated somebody to follow up on the issue,” said Didier Robert. A 70-member French delegation of elected representatives from the island is in Chennai to promote culture, tourism and industry specific links.
The island has opened a branch of French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Chennai and its carrier Air Austral has started a direct flight from Chennai to Reunion.
The airline offers convenient connections from Reunion to South Africa, Madagascar, Seychelles, Mauritius, Mayotte and Comoros in the Indian Ocean region for travellers from eight Indian cities including Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Hyderabad. Air Austral has also tied up with Jet Airways to transfer passengers to seven Indian cities.
