According to reports, implementation of “clean coal” and thermal technology in Meghalaya may help address the problem of environmental degradation besides generating energy, experts said at an interactive session on clean technology energy and water here.
Chairman of Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MPCB) M Allya stressed the need of adopting clean and green technologies in the state keeping in mind the fragile ecosystem and the importance of preserving the environment.
“Meghalaya, with abundant resources, has tremendous potential for industrial growth in terms of mineral- based industries like thermal and hydel power plants. But a proper plan needs to be taken to maintain a balance between industrial growth and environment protection by adopting clean technology,” said Allya.
Dwelling on the adverse impact of rampant unscientific mining and quarrying in the state, he said, “Clean coal technology in thermal power plants and coal industries is the need of the hour”.
