Two solar powered cars designed by students of Orissa Engineering College, Bhubaneswar

According to reports, two solar powered cars have been designed, fabricated and assembled by the Mechanical Engineering Department of Orissa Engineering College, Bhubaneswar.

These two cars were inaugurated on 24th April 2013 on the eve of “ZAZEN” 2013. On this occassion Principal of the college Prof. (Dr.) T. C. Panda, Director Administration, Mrs. Suprita Patnaik, Director Public Relation, Mrs. Sonya Patnaik, Director Student Welfare, Er. S. P. Patnaik, Senior Professors, all faculty members and students of the institute were present.

These Solar Cars can be used in Airports, Railway Stations, Educational institutions, ware houses, Industries, Shopping Mall, and Zoo for in-house activities.

These solar cars have been designed and guided by Prof. Pankaj Charan Jena and Prof. Sanjay Kumar Behera, senior faculty members in Mechanical Engineering Department and developed by students of 3rd year & 4th year. These solar cars have been constructed using in-house facilities of the Department Workshop. The manufacturing costs of these cars were borne by the college authorities and they have assured of moral and financial support for such developmental activities in days to come.

Prof. (Dr.) Dayal Ramkrishna Parhi, NIT, Rourkela gave all valuable advices for its design and development. The Unit price of the Solar Car is around Rupees seventy thousand. The initial and running costs of these eco-friendly cars will be much less in comparison to its conventional Petrol & Diesel counterparts. The extensive use of these solar cars will go a long way in checking the pollution.

Attempts are being made by its designer Prof. Pankaj Charan Jena to develop solar vehicles for its versatile use of the technology in water locomotives and other fields.
