Nagaland to tap into solar energy soon, says MLA

According to reports, Nagaland People’s Front MLA and new and renewable energy (NRE) department adviser Khriehu Liezietsu on Friday said the department would set up mega solar projects in the state and has begun discussions with various developers.

Addressing the Kohima district-level National Science Day celebrations here on Friday, the legislator said steps have been taken by the government to ease the power woes faced by the people. The aim is to harness green and clean renewable energy sources in the state for energy security, socio-economic and environmental benefits, he added.

The NRE department, he said, is involved in the development of alternative sources of energy like solar, hydro, biomass, and others. The development of these sources of energy is becoming most important because other natural sources of energy like coal, petroleum and natural gas are running out and becoming more and more expensive, he said.

The burning of coal and petroleum products, he further said, contribute to climate change and global warming, which is hazardous for life on earth. It is, thus, important to find new ways to minimize its effects, he added.

To this end, he said, the role of students is very important because with the right knowledge, the state can harness its own natural resources.

He also said the progress of human civilization depends on the advancement of science and technology, and therefore called upon students to take up science studies more seriously, so that they benefit from it and help the society to advance.
