First carbon credits for Okhla plant

According to reports, South Delhi Municipal Corporation’s composting plant in Okhla has become the first to get carbon credits from United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in the country. The civic agency has been given an advance of Rs 25 lakh against net Carbon Emission Reduction (CER) earning from the plant.

The plant was made operational in 2008 and since then close to two lakh tonnes of waste has been processed. Officials say the in near future the quantity of waste processed per day will be increased. The corporation has outsourced the operation to IL&FS. IL&FS is preparing a programme to upgrade the plant.
