Chandigarh Municipal Corporation mulls over proposals to harness solar energy

According to reports, the Municipal Corporation is mulling on proposals to harness solar energy. The proposal entails making use of solar energy in the buildings as well as for street lighting. A provision of Rs 1 crore has been made in the budget for the financial year 2013-14.

The proposal being mooted is that solar panels could be installed on the buildings of community centres that belong to the MC. The requirement of electricity for the building could be fulfilled through solar power. The proposal will be initiated in one community centre and on that receiving success, it could be replicated.

Chandigarh was named a solar city some time ago. Mayor Subhash Chawla says, “The equipment for harnessing solar energy is available at a subsidized rate. It could be installed on one of the community centres and the benefits observed. Ways to extend this to other buildings could be found. Provision has been made in the budget.”

Discussion has also been held on having solar-powered street lights. At present, the MC pays Rs 1 crore as its electricity bill to the UT Administration for the street lights. However, no meters have been installed. The feasibility of the proposal is yet to be looked into.

The earlier experiments with having solar powered streetlights have not been successful. One of the main problems encountered was the theft of the batteries due to which street lights became defunct. MC will also look at powering the street lights in the green belts with solar power.
