According to reports, ball bearing maker National Engineering Industries, a part of $1.8 billion C K Birla Group is planning to enter into large size wind mill bearing manufacturing.
NEI president and ceo Rohit Saboo told ET that the company has lined up Rs 50 crore for setting up the assembly line for the bearing production. The bearings used in wind turbines are very large, with bore diameters of between 100 mm and 700 mm.
“We produce 500-700 different types of bearings ranging from automobile to industrial uses. This will be an altogether new segment for us. With more and more companies foraying in to wind power, this segment holds good potential for us,” he said.
The Rs 100-crore wind mill bearings market already has multinational bearing makers like SKF, SAG and NSK supplying to the wind energy companies.
“Each wind turbine requires 4-5 bearings. It will be a good beginning if we start with an annual production of 5000 bearings,” he said without specifying the time line for production. Apart from that, the company will also invest up to Rs 1100 crore in the next five years to double production capacity, including setting up of a new plant, and also on overseas acquisitions.
