Gamesa to support India International Regatta 2011

According to reports, wind turbine major Gamesa will be the gold sponsor for the India International Regatta, which is to take place in Chennai between October 2 and 9.

“For the next year, we want to be the title sponsor,” Ramesh Kymal, Managing Director, Gamesa India, told Business Line today. The current year’s title sponsor is Volvo. Gamesa is interested in strengthening its association with the sailing event, Kymal said. The regatta, organised by the Yachting Association of India, the Tamil Nadu Sailing Association and the Chennai Sailing Academy, will see over a hundred sailors from some 10 countries contesting for top positions.

Globally, Gamesa is a big time supporter of sailing and yachting events. The Gamesa Sailing Team is led by Mike Golding, an accomplished sailor. The Company has announced its intention to sponsor Mike’s competition in the 2012 Vendee Globe competition, in which sailors race to circumnavigate the globe solo.

“The sea and wind are important for Gamesa,” Kymal said. In Europe, Gamesa is a major player in the offshore wind power market.

The company has been in India on its own in the last two years and last month it installed its 500’th machine, in Maharashtra. In India, Gamesa sells wind turbines of capacity of 850 kw, but come January, it will launch its 2 MW machine.
