Orient Green Power Company Ltd reaches 300 MW of Renewable Energy Capacity

Orient Green Power Company (OGPL), a leading independent renewable energy-based power generation company in India has reached 300 megawatts (MW) of Renewable Energy Capacity. The company through its subsidiary Beta Wind Farms, has synchronized a wind farm of 40.80 MW capacity with the state grid of Tamil Nadu. This wind farm is located at Kazugumalai in the Tirunelveli Thuthukudi Districts of Tamil Nadu. Orient Green Power Europe a subsidiary of Orient Green Power Company also has synchronized 10.5 MW wind farm in Croatia recently. With the addition of this wind farms, OGPL has an operating capacity of 250 MW of wind energy apart from 50 MW of Biomass based power making it one of major Renewable Energy Power producer in the country. In Tamil Nadu alone it operates 245 MW of Green Power making it one of the leading Renewable IPP in the state. OGPL’s total operating capacity in India and overseas totals 300 MW comprising both Wind and Biomass.

During the current financial year the company has added 80 MW till date and plans to add another 147 MW before this fiscal. Another 100 MW of Wind capacity is planned to be added by June 2012 – before the beginning of next wind season – in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. Plans are on to add further capacities in Wind in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and possibly Maharashtra as well in 2012-13.

The steady increase in capacity will see the company consolidate its position as the leading independent renewable energy-based power generation company in India. This is a significant contribution by the company in ensuring a sustainable non-conventional energy source helping the power needs of the country as well as in providing employment opportunities in rural India, making it an inclusive player in the Industry. It also augments in climate change efforts of GOI with clean energy to supplement conventional sources of energy being added under the five year plans.

Mr. T Shivaraman, Vice-Chairman – Orient Green Powre Company Limited said, “We are very pleased to announce reaching 300 MW of operating renewable power assets, a major milestone in company’s progress towards its goal of 1000 MW. We plan to cross 500 MW mark by Q2 of 2012-13 and will continue to be a significant player in the renewable energy space in India”.

OGPL is a renewable energy venture of the Shriram group. The company is a renewable energy producer in India focused on the development, ownership, and operation of wind, biomass and small hydel projects. The company currently has an aggregate installed capacity of 196 MW, comprising 156 MW from wind power and 40 MW biomass projects. It is one of the top two independent operators and developers of wind farms in India based on aggregate installed capacity.
