Harnessing the power of the sun in India

According to reports, solar energy today is confined to just light generation, when its potential is far more — to get much of the everyday usage running on renewable energy. The need for solar energy is rising, but cost continues to be a major challenge for large-scale reach and application. Technology can provide many solutions and that will be the primary role of the 10-member team (from various parts of the world including the United States, Japan, China, South Korea, and Germany) visiting Karnataka this week.

This team, as part of the Dow Corning Citizen service corps, which includes chemical engineers, Ph.Ds, MBA graduates and engineers, among others, will engage in considerable research. They will then provide suggestions for areas that can take in technological solutions and devise better efficiency. One of the areas where the team will be working, is the Ujire region near Mangalore, along with Bengaluru-based social enterprise SELCO, which develops affordable solar energy for rural areas.
