Gujarat to build solar-powered water desalination plants

Gujarat has been in the forefront of renewable energy development and clearly leads the way in terms of developments of projects in solar, offshore, tidal among other areas.

According to reports, the state government is planning to develop solar powered desalination water treatment plants on the 1600km long coastline of Gujarat, said chief minister Narendra Modi. He was addressing the gathering of national and international experts on water at the inaugural session of the seminar, ‘Water for Inclusive Growth,’ at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) in Gandhinagar on Tuesday.

“I had suggested to the prime minister to implement projects to build environmentally clean cities in 500 cities of the country under JNNURM, emphasising on solid waste management and water treatment management. I had also explained the revenue model for the same.

Although the PM liked the idea, the union government has made very little allotment for solid waste management under the project in this budget,” said the CM. Modi informed that the state government was determined to implement this project in as many as 50 cities of Gujarat during the golden jubilee year.
