Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) plans diversifcation in Wind, solar: Plans 50MW Wind farm at Rs. 325 Crore and 25MW Solar Power Project

Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited, a “Mini Ratna” Public Sector Enterprise, under the administrative control of Ministry of Coal (MOC) is a pioneer among the public sector undertakings in Mine cum energy sector.

The company has a cumulative capacity of 30.6 MTPA of lignite and 2490MW of installed capacity generation. In the latest announcement the company, has announced that it will diversify  into new areas of power production including projects based on renewable energy (wind power,  solar power and hydro power).

As a first step the board has approved the spend of Rs.325 Crore for the setting up of 50MW wind farms in Tamil Nadu in the districts of Theni and Tirunelveli. (Read here and here)

The company expects the first units to go on stream in October or November this year. As Panchabuta understands the tender activities are under progress for the same.

The company has also announced plans for a 25MW Solar power project for which consultants need to be appointed.

As Panchabuta has observed, the recent announcement of wind farm projects by a number of such reputed PSU’s etc provide unique opportunities for both new  OEM in the wind space and developers that might otherwise find it very difficult to enter the retail wind market in India through the traditional retail model that has been dominated in India by Suzlon and Vestas.

Once again, the ecosystem opportunities in the grid connected solar space is something that we need to watch out including reliable owners engineers,  technical project consultants and turnkey EPC solution providers.
